How do you "season" cast iron cookware?

I bought some cast iron cookware on eBay and later found that it wasn't seasoned. How do I season it?

Wipe it out well with a paper towel or damp cloth, then make sure it is totally dry inside and out. Coat the inside with shortening or vegetable oil and put it into your oven on low. Make sure it is upside down and place a cookie sheet underneath it to catch any drippings. Keep it in the oven for about 1/2 hour and then remove and put away.

I am glad you asked this question. I am curious myself. I know it involves oiling/greasing the pans and then heating them a few times.
But I am not sure of the exact process….

coat in a little oil and put on stove on high heat. Keep there until quite smokey. Turn off and let cool. Repeat this a few times and your pans will last you years.

bacon grease is the old fashion way, coat it with bacon grease (inside) heat on low on stove, that is the old "country way"

if you are concerned about your health, use Soybean Oil instead of other oils. use Extra Virgin Olive oil if that isn’t available. After you cook, do not wash with soap and water, it takes lots of cooking to "season" your pans from the oils in the food you cook too.
